Youth Summit 2008

By Melanie Norris - Tobacco Prevention Coordinator

On Friday, February 1st ,100 students and their advisors gathered at the Red Lion Hotel in Pasco for a day of anti-tobacco fun and learning.
Key note speaker James Warren, a self labeled Youth Motivator from the state of New York, kicked off the event with a powerful presentation. Warren combined his talents in mentalism and magic, with his passion to share a youth oriented anti-tobacco message, to complete a very unique show. Students were amazed as Warrens head grew to the size of a large balloon and his ability to memorize a deck of cards in less than 45 seconds. While creating illusions as entertainment for the audience, Warren explained that tobacco companies also create illusions as a way to entice new smokers.

Students had the opportunity to attend additional workshops during the day, on topics such as chew tobacco, working together with adults, media literacy, tobacco companies' lies and schemes, and public speaking. The day was a huge success and youth are still talking about the amazing things they saw and learned!

Youth Summit through Youth's eyes

By Corey Wakeley - Marketing Program Director

With nearly 100 students in attendance at the 2008 Youth Summit, five from Richland High School share what they gained from attending the different workshops.

The workshop on Chewing Tobacco was attended by John Sampson. At this workshop Sampson listened to the speaker talk about the dangers of chewing tobacco and other interesting facts. Sampson said he learned that “chew users will probably grow (increase in number) because of  Washington State's no smoking ban, and also that chew has like 23 carcinogens” Sampson will take the information he learned back to anyone at Richland High School who chews.

Katie Webster attended the Understanding Advertising workshop where she watched and analyzed movie clips and chew advertisements. She learned that the "tobacco companies downplay warning labels, pay to have their products appear in movies and are targeting younger generations (as potential customers).” She plans to use the information she learned for trivia at her school.

Ashley Bullock attended the workshop titled The Art of Speaking. The workshop included a game where they couldn’t use the word “um” for 1 minute. She learned that “less is more and to use pauses when speaking and props with needed.” She will use this information when talking with students to keep them interested in what she's discussing with them..

The Power of Adult and Youth Partnership workshop was attended by Caitlin Mitchell. At this workshop she listen to information and participated in an activity where she could agree, disagree, strongly agree, strongly disagree with different statements. She learned that “adults are just as uncertain as youth, they just hide it better.” The information she learned will be useful when working with the adults involved in her SHOUT club.

Martha Sanford attended the Lies and Schemes workshop where she played a game of charades while learning about the lies the tobacco industry tells. She will take this information back with her and let others know “how dirty the tobacco companies really are”.

Through With Chew,  a Community Event

By Amy Ward - Executive Director

Through with Chew week was February 17th - 23rd and local dentists offices were ready to be involved. Five dental offices were each given 50 quit kits that were free to anyone interested in quitting chewing tobacco. These quit kits contained informational brochures, a self exam guide, Through With Chew mints, Through With Chew toothbrush, and samples and information about alternative mint or coconut chew. All of the dentists and office staff were very excited to have a resource for their patients, they felt that the quit kits provided an opportunity to have a meaningful conversation with their patients who use chewing tobacco.

On Saturday, February 16th, the Tri City Americans Hockey Team held a Through with Chew night sponsored by Tobacco Free.2,000 Champions Are Tobacco Free water bottles were given out within the first 15 minutes of the doors being opened and 125 quit kits were given out to anyone who asked.  Additionally, Stone Soup provided "free cold turkey" sandwich coupons for anyone who turned in a can of chew. Facts about the dangers of using chewing tobacco were on the display screens for the sold out crowd to read throughout the game along with Through With Chew ads in the paper and on the tickets for the game.

Through with Chew – Richland High School

On Wednesday February 20th , Richland High SHOUT members had a successful lunch time activity to promote Through with Chew. Members set up a table and trivia wheel and gave Richland High students the opportunity to win prizes by spinning the wheel and answering trivia questions related to chewing tobacco and other tobacco related topics. It was a huge hit and SHOUT members gave away over 50 prizes to the Richland High School student body!

Through with Chew - Kennewick High School

In honor of Through with Chew week, SHOUT members at Kennewick High School created anti-tobacco posters that filled one of the main hallways of the school, passed out chewing gum with stickers on them that said "Chew on this instead of tobacco", and played Tobacco Trivia with other Kennewick High School students during lunch on Thursday.

The week was fun for all those involved and seemed to heighten the awareness of the dangers of chewing tobacco for students at Kennewick High School.
